National Trails Day

It was a beautiful June morning. A perfect day to be out on the trails. The first Saturday of June is celebrated annually as National Trails Day. All across the country, those who love the outdoors donate their time to show respect, maintain, and restore trails and natural areas. 20 volunteers came out on Saturday, June 5th to show some love to the park. Volunteers were tasked with clearing debris from trails, putting up markers to make the trails easier to follow, and clearing out a portion of the blueberry patch. We had many returning volunteers, including the Taconic Hiking Club and Grafton Trail Riders. These two groups in particular, focused their efforts on trails around the Dunham Reservoir. South of Route 2, the Dunham Reservoir is a nice get-away from the hustle and bustle of the main part of the park. However, the trails also tend to get less maintenance attention. Grafton Lakes State Park Celebrates 50th Anniversary

In honor of the anniversary, efforts were made to design a celebration that would build community by highlighting the beauty and history of the park as a part of the surrounding town of Grafton. The main two projects were an art gallery that was displayed in the Welcome Center over the 4 th of July weekend and an oral history movie that compiled stories told by 15 different people. Cabin Fever (Winter Fest)

Winter blues are a common feeling during the best of years, let alone during the midst of a pandemic. Not able to have its annual Winterfest event that usually attracts 1,500 people, Grafton Lakes State Park rose to the challenge to redesign the popular January event to accommodate COVID protocols and safety measures. Winterfest was renamed “Cabin Fever” to highlight this familiar winter feeling. The event consisted of outings spread all over the park, a guided trail, and live animals. Over 15 organizations, including the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, Adirondack Mountain Club, and Dyken Pond Environmental Center came together to lead hikes and give presentations, dedicating their Saturday to this event. Participants in the guided trail were treated with different presentations in the “Embrace the Cold” theme: winter hiking (Alpha Dual Adventures), winter survival (Tamakoce Wilderness Programs), snow science (SUNY Albany), and more.
